How Much Is It Costing You to Stay Where You Are?
How Much Is It Costing You to Stay Where You Are?
Sometimes we spend so much time thinking about the risk of changing that we never calculate the cost of staying exactly where we are.
This exercise is not designed to convince you to leave a job, end a relationship, move, or make a major life change. It is designed to make sure you are evaluating both choices honestly.
Write down the situation you are considering changing.
Then answer:
What does staying give me?
Be specific. Consider security, money, familiarity, relationships, status, comfort, convenience, and anything else you would be giving up.
What does staying cost me?
Consider your time, energy, opportunities, relationships, finances, confidence, growth, and quality of life.
If nothing changes for one year, what will my life look like?
What about three years?
What am I afraid will happen if I make a change?
Now ask yourself something harder:
What am I assuming will happen if I stay?
We tend to treat staying as the safe choice and changing as the risky one. But staying is also a decision—and it has consequences.
The question isn't simply, What could I lose if I change?
Ask yourself:
What could I lose if I don't?
