How to Make a Difficult Decision When You Feel Stuck

A difficult decision rarely becomes easier because you think about it for the hundredth time in exactly the same way.

Instead of asking, “Which choice is right?” start separating the decision into parts.

Write down each realistic option.

For each one, answer:

What do I gain?

What do I give up?

What problem does this choice solve?

What new problems might it create?

What am I assuming will happen?

Which assumptions do I actually have evidence for?

Then ask:

Which option fits the life I say I want?

And finally:

If I weren't trying to eliminate all uncertainty, what would I choose?

A good decision does not guarantee a good outcome. You can make a thoughtful decision and still encounter disappointment, difficulty, or something you couldn't predict.

The goal isn't perfect certainty.

The goal is to understand why you are making the choice you're making.
